The New Orleans Saints are a professional American football team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Saints play in the South Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the NFL.

The New Orleans Saints were started in 1967 as an expansion team and played all of their home games at Tulane Stadium up to the 1974 season. The Saints went more than a decade before they were able to conclude a season with a .500 record, 2 full decades before having a winning season, and over four decades before making it to the Super Bowl. The team’s first successful years were from 1987–1992, when the team made the playoffs four times and had winning records in the non-playoff seasons. In the 2000 season, the Saints conquered the then-defending Super Bowl champion St. Louis Rams for the team’s initial playoff win.

The Saints’ 2009 season was the team’s best season. The 11/30/09 Monday Night Football game against the New England Patriots, a game in which the Saints went to an 11–0 record for the first time in franchise history, was the second highest rated cable program to date. After becoming 13–0 with their win over the Atlanta Falcons, it marked the Saints’ best start to a season in its franchise’s history. The end result clinched an NFC playoff berth, a bye in the first round of the playoffs. By winning their first 13 games, the Saints at the same time set the record for the longest undefeated season opening (13-0) by an NFC team since the AFL–NFL merger, eclipsing the previous record (12-0) held by the 1985 Chicago Bears. The Saints advanced to the 2009 NFC Championship game where they defeated the Minnesota Vikings 31-28 in overtime, sending the team to their first Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.

Learning Piano Basics

Feb 13, 2010 in Business

I was one of those people who always dreamed of playing the piano but never thought I could. At least I was until I came across some short, simple lessons on the basics of piano playing. I decided to give it a try, and I have been practicing ever since.

When I started, I knew what a piano looked like, but I had not really taken notice of how the white and black keys make a pattern. That was the first little bit of instruction that helped me to realize that the piano might be decipherable after all. Since the keyboard could be broken down into sections, I had something to guide me in finding each individual key.

It all started with simple lessons in material I already had before me. I realized that it was quite fun to try out the new ideas presented in each lesson and later on even test myself to see how much I had improved. I learned to practice playing and writing notes, clapping rhythms, and eventually stringing together melodies. The more I practiced these things the more improvement I could hear.

What struck me immediately was how quickly I was actually improving. It’s true that many children are taught in a very slow, methodic manner, but I found it quite rewarding to see and hear my own progress happening so quickly. After all, I was making time for my self-taught lessons between a busy work schedule and active home life. I didn’t have time for slow!

As I improved I had a craving to play music that was not presented in my lessons. I wanted to play something familiar and recognizable. That is when I followed suggestions in my lessons and purchased my first music books. I brought home an Easy Piano Book and a Fake Book.

I recognized many of the songs in my Easy Piano Book because they were familiar Broadway musical songs, and I was completely ecstatic to hear myself playing them rather easily. I had to start with sight reading from the Easy Book, but to my astonishment I found that rather easy to catch onto.

My Fake Book on the other hand was filled with modern tunes that I heard a lot on the radio, and I found it more difficult to master these songs. I had to look up new chords before attempting each song because I didn’t know them all yet, so it was a new challenge to learn from the Fake Book.

Yet, I was able to catch on quicker than I would have ever imagined and I started to actually play songs my friends and I loved to sing along with on the radio. It turned into something enjoyable for all of us as I played and they sang along these songs we all loved.

Now that I know the basics of the piano I am a much happier person. I set out to learn something new and I accomplished it much faster than I imagined it would be possible. I will never be a professional performer and I am definitely not an expert on the piano, but I am a very content player who has taught herself something quite remarkable.
