Care of your teeth is something that British people are not exactly known for but in recent years it has started to improve. Dental techniques such as teeth whitening are now becoming more common with products like crest whitening strips and the introduction of practise branded dental plans becoming more widely available.

British teeth have never really been that bad, we have just always taken more interest in the health of our teeth rather than the aesthetic look of them. It is mainly young people with good dental hygiene, where as older people usually have lots of fillings. Sometime in the 1980?s attitudes began to improve and braces became more common.

Even I had to have braces to fix my overbite and to straighten up my teeth. The process wasn?t that bad, I had to have a mould of my teeth made up and then had the brace fitted which took a while as I was having the different parts cemented onto my teeth. The next step was that the wires were fitted and tightened. This was the worst part of the procedure because I was left with a constant pulling feeling on my teeth, which gave me a dull ache for the first few days. The pain disappeared after a couple of days and I just had to learn to live with them.

The braces sorted out my teeth and I?m glad I had braces for that year or so as I can imagine they could have caused a few problems throughout my later life. In recent years dental care in Great Britain has developed. Teeth whitening is the latest craze with everything from whitening strips to laser whitening being used at the dentist and at home. Another development is the use of dental plans by dentist practises. These are practise branded dental payment plans that allow NHS patients to use private dentists at a reasonable rate.

Lots of people avoid going to the dentist because of dental anxiety. Phobias like these are either irrational or because of past experiences. I attend my dental practise every 6 months and have never had any issues visiting my dentist. I’ve never had a filling but have had a range of different treatments and been fine.

From speaking to my friends many people seem to have a problem with fillings. People often speak of big needles and pain killers not working. As a result lots of people avoid the dentist because of dental practise phobia.

Those that avoid dental practises can end up with lots of teeth problems. Not visiting the dentist can result in tooth decay and gum disease. These conditions will give you bad breath but lack of treatment can result in teeth falling out. A dentist can prevent this and also save your life by spotting mouth cancer.

It is for these reasons dental practises are looking for ways to stop patients dental anxiety in order to get people to come back to the dentist. Practises have been encouraging their patients to speak to their dentist about their phobia. Dentists discuss options like counselling, sedation and hypnotherapy all of which have differing results.
